Requirements for Admission

As a Clinical Candidate:

Admission for training in psychoanalysis is based on the Standards of the American Psychoanalytic Association.

The selection of applicants for clinical psychoanalytic education and training is based on an assessment of their eligibility and readiness: prior education, clinical training, clinical experience, aptitude, and potential for psychoanalytic competence.

Applicants must have graduated from an accredited post-baccalaureate degree-based clinical mental health educational program. They should have at least one of the following:

  1. A medical degree with psychiatric residency training
  2. A doctoral level degree in a mental health field
  3. A clinical masters degree (when this degree is recognized as the highest clinical degree generally obtained within a specific mental health profession) supplemented by at least two years of additional didactic and clinical training

For all applicants, this postgraduate education must include, or be supplemented by, full immersion in an organized didactic curriculum which includes psychodynamic seminars and which is accompanied by supervised clinical training experience.

There should be a minimum of 3,000 hours or the equivalent of two years of full-time mental health clinical experience under weekly individual supervision. This clinical experience should include some work with the full range of mental disorders and exposure to inpatient and emergency mental health care.

There should be at least 60 hours of individual supervision in the practice of psychodynamic psychotherapy, enabling the applicant to demonstrate a capacity to establish a therapeutic process and indicating the applicant's potential for psychoanalytic clinical competence.

Applicants must obtain appropriate licensure or certification and the insurance necessary for the practice of psychoanalysis in the jurisdiction in which they intend to practice.

As a Research Candidate (for Non-Clinical Applicants):

The Institute welcomes applications for psychoanalytic training from medical and non-medical research investigators and scholars, and from other professionals who seek this training in order to enrich their scientific, scholarly or other activities.

Training for research candidates involves personal analysis with a training analyst of this Institute and a curriculum of courses. It does not include the supervised analysis of patients.
