Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program
Spring Quarter
Extension Classes
March-June 2008
Child and Adolescent Clinical Case Conferences
The child's verbal and nonverbal productions in therapeutic session, and
the clinician's response to this material, are used in case conference
to develop a deeper appreciation of the child's internal experience. By
using current case material, we will identify possible latent meaning of
the child's presentation, and then use this process knowledge to
formulate and refine the treatment approach. The various phases of
therapy, from diagnosis, through beginning to termination, including
transference and counter-transference issues will be examined.
Participants will provide their own clinical work for discussion.

Necessary Skills for the New Child Mental Health System
As the Illinois Children's Mental Health Partnership proceeds in
creating a new Children's Mental Health System, what are the skills that
clinicians need in order to participate effectively in this new system?
Providing clinical services within this developing clinical paradigm
requires skill sets and capacities not found yet in traditional
educational venues. This course begins to provide the foundation for the
development of these skill sets of the future. It will take a
developmental approach to understanding how early experiences, both
positive and negative, contribute and shape the infant into the young
child that he or she will become. In addition, it will identify a
culturally sensitive approach to clinical interventions and actions.

May 2, 9 (6 sessions 12 CEUS)
Time: 3:00-5:00 p.m.

122 S. Michigan Ave.

Instructor: William D. Gieseke, PhD, LCPC is a faculty member of
the CAPPT Program and has been working with children, adolescents and
their families for over 30 years. He has worked in a variety of
clinical settings and has consulted with schools, community mental
health centers, and childrens' mental health advocacy organizations. He
is in private practice in Northfield.
Working With Parents
D.W. Winnicott once said that you can't have an infant without a
parent or a parent without an infant. The two are crucial for one
another. As therapists we cannot work with children without working
with the parents. And the work with parents is often considered one of
the most challenging aspects of child therapy. We will examine the
importance of developing a working alliance with the parents and how
this can be accomplished, and consider the complex factors that face
both the therapist and the parents. Didactic material as well as
clinical material and class discussion will be utilized.
Dates: Saturdays - May 31; June 7, and 21 (3 sessions, 4.5 CEUS)
